The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team faced a challenging series opener against the 15th-ranked UW-Stevens Point, resulting in a 4-0 loss on Friday at K.B. Willett Arena. The Pointers secured their victory with two late goals in the second period, marking the first of three encounters between these Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) teams this season.
UW-Stevens Point (6-3-1, 3-1-1) took an early lead with a goal just over seven minutes before the end of the first period. They extended their advantage with a power play goal under three minutes remaining in the second period and added another goal in the final minute of that period. The scoring was concluded with a fourth goal midway through the third period.
Max Gutjahr, a junior from Appleton, Wis., made 29 saves for the Blugolds (4-6-1, 3-2-0). However, UW-Eau Claire was unable to capitalize on any of their three power play opportunities. The Pointers outshot them 33 to 27.
The series will continue on Saturday, December 14, at Hobbs Ice Arena. The Blugolds will host the Pointers at 7 p.m., coinciding with Alumni Night.
