The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's lacrosse team experienced the end of their four-game winning streak with a 12-6 loss to the College of Saint Benedict. Taking place on Monday night, the Bennies secured the lead late in the first quarter and maintained their position throughout the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) contest.
The Blugolds, with a record of 7-5 and 4-2 in the WIAC, initially led 2-1, thanks to early goals by Reegan Werner and Victoria Shea. However, a goal by Jess Stiller later tied the game at 3-3. Despite this, Saint Benedict, standing at 6-5 and 3-2 in the conference, regained the lead with 2:37 remaining in the first quarter and never trailed from there.
The Bennies extended their lead in the second quarter with a 4-0 scoring run, bringing the halftime score to 8-3 in their favor. Although UW-Eau Claire saw goals from Devon Crews, Werner, and Ellie Fisher in the second half, these efforts fell short in bridging the gap.
Crews provided two assists, leading to a team-high of three points. Simultaneously, Victoria Shea achieved five draw controls. Defensively, Alexandria Shea contributed significantly with 12 saves, despite Saint Benedict having a shot advantage of 36-29.
Looking ahead, the Blugolds are set to face UW-Stevens Point in another WIAC matchup. The game will occur on Wednesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in Stevens Point. Fans can follow the Blugolds' season on Blugolds.com, the Blugold Sports app, and social media platforms.
