Kailey Tulachka, a sophomore from Mishicot, Wisconsin, has been named UW-Eau Claire Athletics' Blugold of the Week. She is majoring in Physical Education and represents the university in basketball.
Tulachka shared her reasons for choosing UW-Eau Claire: "I chose Eau Claire because it felt like the closest thing to home. The environment Coach Englund and my teammates have created made that decision even easier. I knew I wanted to be a part of something much bigger than myself and I knew Eau Claire would be the perfect place for that. Aside from basketball, Eau Claire is such a beautiful campus and I thoroughly enjoy the education I am receiving."
Balancing academics with athletics is challenging, according to Tulachka: "Balancing being a student and an athlete is definitely not for the weak of heart. A lot of time goes into being an athlete, but knowing when to draw that line and put the work into your classes is super important. It's all about time management and perseverance."
Reflecting on her achievements at UW-Eau Claire, she said: "I think my proudest moment so far at UWEC was being named Rookie of the Year my freshman year. I'm proud that all my work I put in last season was recognized."
Tulachka aspires to return to her hometown as a physical education teacher and hopes to coach women's basketball there: "My dream job is to return to Mishicot and teach physical education. I would also love to become the head coach of the women's basketball team at Mishicot and create a dynasty."
She expressed her interest in traveling: "I would love to travel Europe and visit all of the historic places." Additionally, she mentioned wanting to meet Jared McCain: "I would love to spend the day with Jared McCain because it's really cool to see someone my age thrive so much in their sport. I love the way he can be a pro athlete and still not afraid to be himself. He has such a cool personality and deserves so much respect for how he handles life."
Her advice for fellow student-athletes emphasizes patience: "Take it one day at a time because the big picture can be overwhelming. Celebrate the small victories but continue to work toward a larger goal."
Head Women's Basketball Coach Tonja Englund praised Tulachka's contributions: "'Kailey T' always brings a tremendous amount of energy, compete and leadership to the team. She has great work ethic in the weight room, on the playing floor and is willing to do what it takes to win in-season and out of season. She leads by example and with her heart while she is playing. She is a winner in everything she takes on in her life."
