The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team faced defeats in the first two games of their four-game series against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, played at Carson Park. The Blugolds lost the opening contests 10-0 and 17-5.
Both games ended in seven innings. In the first game, the Titans held the Blugolds to just three hits. They built an early five-run lead with the help of two home runs in the first four innings, from which the Blugolds could not recover. The score stood at 5-0 until the seventh inning when Oshkosh added five more runs. UW-Eau Claire went scoreless in the bottom half, resulting in a game-end under the mercy rule.
Brennan Cohen, a senior from Vestavia Hills, Alabama, was the starting pitcher for the first game, pitching for six innings, allowing five runs, and striking out two.
In the second game, the Blugolds again fell behind early. Oshkosh took an early lead with four runs in the second inning and had a lead of 13-1 after five and a half innings. The Blugolds made a late attempt to rally, scoring four runs in the sixth inning, assisted by RBI singles from Cole Clausen, Kyle Babin, and Brayton Thillman. This effort cut the deficit to 13-5, but Oshkosh scored another four runs in the seventh, securing their victory.
Freshman Austin Curti from River Falls, Wisconsin, led the Blugolds' lineup with two hits in the second game, while Evan Fischer, another freshman, managed to strike out six in his five-inning start.
The series between UW-Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh will continue on Sunday, April 13, at Carson Park, with the start time moved to 10 a.m. from its original noon schedule.
