Blugolds excel on first day of WIAC Championship

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's tennis team has made a strong start at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship, held at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. On the first day of competition, all five singles players from UW-Eau Claire won their opening matches. Additionally, the university's three doubles teams are set to compete for third place on Sunday.

In the singles category, Samantha Fuchs, seeded second at No. 1 singles, secured a victory with scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Morgan Dekan, holding the third seed in the No. 3 flight, also triumphed with a scoreline of 6-0 and 6-1. Liv Herzog, seeded third at No. 4 singles, emerged victorious with scores of 6-1 and 6-1. Reese Burton achieved a win with an impressive score of 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 5 singles as the second seed. Téa Armstrong completed the successful day for UW-Eau Claire by winning her match at No. 6 singles with scores of 6-2 and 6-2.

Anna Lee is positioned as the top seed at No. 2 singles and advanced directly to the semifinals due to a bye.

In doubles play, Fuchs and Lee managed to win their initial match but were defeated in the semifinals with a score of 8-6. They will face off against a duo from UW-Stevens Point for third place on Sunday.

Dekan and Herzog also claimed victory in their opening match at No. 2 doubles but fell short in the semifinals with an 8-5 loss. They are scheduled to compete against a team from UW-Oshkosh for third place on Day Two.

Armstrong paired with Aubrey Wittwer to secure an initial win in their No. 3 doubles opener by an impressive margin of 8-0 before losing in the semifinals with an outcome of 8-3. Their next challenge will be against another team from UW-Stevens Point for third place on Sunday.

The championship continues on Sunday, October 27th starting at nine o'clock in the morning when final doubles matches will take place alongside singles semifinals, finals, and placement contests.
