The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team faced a setback in their series opener against Concordia-Moorhead, losing 3-1 on Friday at Hobbs Ice Arena. Despite a strong offensive effort from the Blugolds, Concordia managed to secure the victory in the first game of the two-game series.
In the match, the ninth-ranked Blugolds recorded 45 shots on goal. However, they were met with resistance as the Cobbers' goalie successfully made 44 saves. Concordia opened the scoring with a short-handed goal midway through the first period and maintained a 1-0 lead at intermission.
McKenna Sandberg from Saint Michael, Minnesota scored an equalizer for UW-Eau Claire early in the second period with assists from Ava Johansson and Quinn Hartmetz. Nevertheless, Concordia quickly regained their lead just over a minute later with what would become the game-winning goal. The Cobbers added another goal in the third period to seal their win.
Tegan Swanson contributed to UW-Eau Claire's efforts by making 21 saves during her time in net.
The teams are set to face each other again as they continue their series on Saturday, January 11 at Hobbs Ice Arena.
