The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team faced their first loss in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) this season, falling 67-53 to the fourth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The game took place on Wednesday at the Sonnentag Event Center.
UW-Oshkosh established an early lead in the first quarter, outscoring UW-Eau Claire 24-15. The Titans began with an 11-3 run, which set the tone for the rest of the game. Despite efforts from the Blugolds to close the gap, they never managed to take control after falling behind.
Reanna Hutchinson, Kyla Overskei, and Anna Koth contributed a series of three-pointers during a 9-0 run in the second quarter, reducing UW-Oshkosh's lead to just two points. However, UW-Oshkosh responded with a strong finish to the half and led by ten points at halftime.
In the second half, UW-Oshkosh extended their advantage by outscoring UW-Eau Claire 15-11 in the third quarter. The Blugolds struggled to recover from a double-digit deficit for most of this period.
Kyla Overskei achieved her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Reanna Hutchinson added another ten points along with three rebounds. Lauren Meudt recorded nine points and six assists while Anna Koth scored eight points.
Despite shooting effectively at 46%, turnovers were detrimental for UW-Eau Claire as they committed 23 compared to UW-Oshkosh's fewer errors. The Titans capitalized on these mistakes with eleven steals.
Looking ahead, UW-Eau Claire is scheduled to face off against UW-River Falls in another WIAC contest on Saturday, January 11th at 3 p.m.
