General Motors intern wins national award for achievements during co-op program
Julia Hellquist was initially uncertain about pursuing higher education, as she was the first in her family to consider college. Drawn by UW-Stout’s lab-based, applied learning focus, she enrolled and graduated in December 2023 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Design Wisconsin returns to UW-Stout campus in 2025

Hosted by Milwaukee Tool at its headquarters and supported by the Milwaukee chapter of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), the event featured displays from over 20 companies, including Mercury, Kohler, Gulfstream, Oshkosh Corp., National Presto, Trek, Brooks Stevens, and Fiskars.

On May 1, UW-Stout held its annual Leadership Awards ceremony, recognizing more than 100 students for their exceptional contributions to the university. Thirteen seniors were honored with the Samuel E. Wood Medallion, the highest nonacademic award for students at UW-Stout, given to less than 1% of full-time students.

Milwaukee Tool to Host UW-Stout’s Third Annual Design Wisconsin Event
UW-Stout, the Industrial Designers Society of America-Milwaukee chapter, and Milwaukee Tool will host the third annual Design Wisconsin event on May 18. The event will take place at Milwaukee Tool headquarters, located at 551 N. 5th St. in Milwaukee, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. While admission is free, attendees are encouraged to register in advance.

Video production seniors shoot Western short ‘Ghosts of Gold Creek’ in Montana
Nine UW-Stout students recently traveled 1,200 miles from Menomonie to Anaconda, Mont., to film a Western short titled “Ghosts of Gold Creek.” The capstone project, set in 1868, follows a U.S. marshal investigating the murder of a mayor in a small mining town.Co-writers Zach Hoffmire and Nicos Wiard shared their inspiration for the film, with Wiard stating, “But what if he didn’t drown?
