Food science students present plans to prevent contamination at UW-Stout
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 48 million people per year contract a foodborne illness, such as salmonella and E. coli. To help identify and prevent biological, chemical, and physical hazards in food, UW-Stout master's in food science and technology student Srihaasa Vempatapu and FST undergraduate senior Lainie Carlson researched Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) – a food safety measurement system used in every stage of the production process.

Engineering students tackle Cambodian village challenges through innovative designs
Cross-disciplinary students in the Impacts of Engineering course at UW-Stout this spring investigated ways to improve the quality of life for people in the remote forests of eastern Cambodia. Through the Engineers Without Borders' Design for People Challenge, they worked in teams to engineer solutions for the Bunong people in the rural village of Pu Ngaol.

Young scientists explore nature with university professors at annual event
On a sunny Saturday morning in May, 24 area children engaged in hands-on scientific activities led by University of Wisconsin-Stout environmental science faculty and retired educators at the Colfax Red Cedar Preserve and Recreation Area’s annual Science Exploration Day. The event aimed to educate second- to sixth-graders about local habitats and creatures through interactive sessions.
