Simpson Field | UW-Eau Claire Blugolds
The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's soccer team earned its first win of the season by defeating Augsburg University 1-0 on Wednesday at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis. The Blugolds managed to score the decisive goal in the second half, making one of their four total shots count. Their defense was tested throughout the match, with goalkeeper Bella Jones recording five saves to secure the shutout against 13 shot attempts from Augsburg.
The opening half saw both teams focusing on defense. Bella Jones started as goalkeeper for UW-Eau Claire, and after an early foul by Emma Donovan in the third minute, the Blugolds remained composed. Caroline Curran nearly scored in the 22nd minute, but her effort missed. Augsburg responded with several attacks, including a shot that hit the woodwork in the 26th minute. The first half ended without any goals.
Early in the second half, Jones made a save just seconds after play resumed. In the 51st minute, Emma Donovan scored what would be the game's only goal, giving UW-Eau Claire a lead they would not relinquish. Jones continued to play a key role defensively, making important stops including one in the 83rd minute to maintain her clean sheet.
Donovan finished as both scorer and game-winner for UW-Eau Claire while Jones' five saves ensured Augsburg could not equalize. Haley Von Rentzell also contributed with one shot during the match.
With this result, UW-Eau Claire's record moved to 1-3-1 overall while Augsburg dropped to 2-2-0.
UW-Eau Claire will next host College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) on September 13 at Simpson Field at 2 p.m.
