Packaging students from the University of Wisconsin-Stout have achieved first place in the 2025 International Molded Fiber Association (IMFA) Student Competition. The team, consisting of Preston Briggs, Hunter Clausen, Lukas David, and Isaiah Sparks, developed a sustainable packaging solution for a waffle iron by replacing polystyrene components with molded fiber.
The team’s advisor, Packaging Assistant Professor Kate Liu, praised their work: “The team’s final design solution closely reveals real-world applications and effectively addresses the initial challenge.” She credited their success to excellent leadership and solid design skills learned through coursework and internships.
Briggs presented the winning design at IMFA's 27th Annual Conference in Miami. IMFA supported their participation by covering all expenses. The organization is committed to promoting environmentally sustainable packaging solutions using renewable materials.
Liu highlighted UW-Stout's unique B.S. in packaging program as one of only a few in the U.S., emphasizing its comprehensive courses and co-op opportunities that prepare students for careers in packaging design.
In addition to this achievement, UW-Stout students have recently won other competitions including those sponsored by Kellanova and the Paperboard Packaging Alliance.
