Wartburg College secured a 1-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a women's soccer match held Wednesday at Simpson Field. The decisive goal came in the second half, with Wartburg converting one of its 10 shots on target.
UW-Eau Claire's goalkeeper, Bella Jones, made nine saves during the game. The Blugolds had six shots on goal but were unable to score.
The first half featured early pressure from UW-Eau Claire, including several corner kicks and attempts. Jones kept Wartburg from scoring by stopping shots from Sami Webster and Maya Anderson. Offensive opportunities were created by Mikalyn Hidde and Jayda Swopes, but Wartburg's goalkeeper Tulla Jensen maintained a clean sheet. The half ended with neither team scoring.
In the second half, Jones continued to make key saves for UW-Eau Claire, including a stop against Athena Sheets in the 47th minute. However, Sami Webster scored for Wartburg in the 60th minute, giving them the lead.
After falling behind, UW-Eau Claire increased its offensive efforts with several corners and shots from Johanna Thompson and Magnolia Millar Bruzek, but Jensen prevented any goals. The match ended with Wartburg holding onto their narrow lead despite continued attacks from UW-Eau Claire.
Jones finished with nine saves while facing 16 shots. Thompson had three shots on goal, Swopes contributed two shots (one on target), and Emma Donovan added another shot on goal for UW-Eau Claire.
With this result, UW-Eau Claire’s season record moves to 1-7-3. Wartburg improves to 5-6-0 overall and starts conference play at 1-0-0.
