The Dunn County Historical Society has announced the unveiling of a new Pet Remembrance Wall, set to take place on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. This event coincides with World Pet Remembrance Day.
Situated on the grounds of the Rassbach Museum, the wall is designed as a portable structure composed of three panels. It provides a space for community members to visit and honor their cherished pets. Visitors can attach personalized remembrance tags at no cost, fostering a communal environment of reflection and tribute.
To facilitate this process, Fulton’s Workshop at the museum will supply materials and tools for crafting custom memorial tags. Among the first pets to be commemorated are historical animals from Dunn County's past, including Old Matt from the Tainter family, Timber and Jake from Lapointe's family, and Old Abe from the 8th Wisconsin Infantry in the Civil War. These tributes highlight both regional history and enduring connections between humans and animals.
"When we were approached about this idea, it seemed like a great way to not only honor furry family members but to remind folks that pets and farm animals are an integral part of our human stories," said Melissa Kneeland, Museum Director. “Wakanda Park is always a popular spot for walking dogs, and our location seemed ideal for all of these elements to come together: remembrance, history, and reflection."
The Pet Remembrance Wall will remain accessible on museum grounds. While remembrance tags can represent any animal companions—not just dogs—the museum requests that visitors refrain from leaving other items at or near the wall; such items will be removed.
