The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's tennis team achieved a narrow victory over Wheaton College in Illinois on Saturday with a 4-3 win. The Blugolds, who are ranked 63rd in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, managed a comeback after losing the doubles point to defeat Wheaton, which holds the 72nd spot in the rankings.
The Blugolds struggled in doubles, winning only one out of three matches. Téa Armstrong and Liv Herzog secured the sole doubles victory in the No. 3 flight, finishing 7-6. UW-Eau Claire lost the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches, both ending with scores of 7-5, allowing Wheaton to take a 1-0 advantage into singles competition.
In singles play, the Blugolds won in the top three flights and at No. 6, clinching the overall victory. Samantha Fuchs triumphed in the No. 1 singles with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win. Anna Lee secured the No. 2 match with scores of 6-4, 6-2, followed by Beatriz Felchak's victory at No. 3 with a 7-6, 6-2 result, and Aubrey Wittwer ending with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 6. Although Herzog forced a third set in the No. 4 match, she was ultimately defeated. Reese Burton lost in straight sets in the No. 5 match.
The Blugolds will face Carthage on Sunday, April 6, with a scheduled start of 12 p.m.
