Benning, a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, found a renewed enthusiasm for learning through his coursework and research projects. As a chemistry major with a biochemistry emphasis, Benning is one of three university undergraduates who were awarded the 2025-26 Goldwater Scholarship. His fellow recipients are Rachel Horejsi and Jada Wahl.
Benning's time at UW-Eau Claire afforded him numerous research opportunities, working closely with faculty members. He described the environment as one where he could engage with faculty who were supportive and offered advice, aiding him significantly in navigating college life.
One of Benning’s research ventures included a study on the color and clarity of dark beer, resulting in a first-author publication. He also studied the potential effects of fungal infections on horseradish, which has practical implications for corporate partners. These projects were conducted under the guidance of Dr. Scott Bailey-Hartsel, professor emeritus of chemistry and biochemistry. Bailey-Hartsel highlighted Benning’s persistence and creative energy, remarking, “Coming up with ideas and following them to conclusion even if they do not work out as you expect is the norm for a successful scientist.”
In another research collaboration, Benning worked with Dr. Tyler Doyon to explore biocatalysis, focusing on the use of enzymes in syntheses relevant to green science. Dr. Doyon praised Benning's deep engagement and curiosity, stating, “His training and background will make him a strong candidate for a number of high-level graduate research institutions.”
Following his undergraduate studies, Benning plans to pursue graduate education and hopes to contribute to drug design and development in the chemistry industry.
