The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has once again been recognized as a top military-friendly campus, marking its third consecutive year of receiving at least a gold-level distinction. This year, the institution achieved a milestone by being ranked in the top 10 nationwide for providing educational paths to the military community.

Chancellor James Schmidt remarked, "Our student veterans who selflessly volunteer to serve and protect our nation deserve and have earned our support at UW-Eau Claire." He described the top 10 recognition as "an important achievement and a testament to our commitment to military-affiliated students."

The university also received accolades as a military spouse-friendly institution. The designation results from evaluations made through surveys and public data, with over 1,800 schools participating in the 2025-26 survey. Out of those, 830 schools received special recognition for surpassing standard expectations.

UW-Eau Claire excelled in various categories such as support and retention, admissions and orientation, graduation and career outcomes, financial aid, loan repayment, and institutional culture and commitment.

Miranda Cross-Schindler, the military and adult services manager, emphasized the importance of the designation for potential student veterans, stating, “This national recognition highlights the resources, academic opportunities and career support we provide to help veterans, active-duty service members and their families succeed.” She believes that this award underscores UW-Eau Claire's reputation as a premier institution for military-connected students.

Cross-Schindler shared her personal journey, noting her transition from military service to academia at UW-Eau Claire, where she earned both her undergraduate degree and MBA.

Sierra Roeske, a student returning from active duty, praised the university for its seamless support and transition back to academic life, saying, "It was reassuring to know that while I was away, there were people on campus who understood the unique circumstances surrounding a reservist on active-duty orders."

She recommends the university for veterans or military-connected students due to its experienced staff and supportive environment. Roeske singled out the Veterans Center as a vital resource, noting its role in providing camaraderie, which she believes is crucial for retention and success.

One of the key offerings of the Veterans Center is a space for students to relax and build relationships, addressing the need for camaraderie often missed when transitioning from military to civilian life. Roeske highlighted that the support system at the Veterans Center significantly contributes to the experience of military-connected students at the university.
