A collaboration between universities has brought a unique digital exhibit to life, showcasing traditional Hmong clothing. Pakou Thao, a student of professional and technical communication at UW-Stout, created the virtual exhibit as part of her Digital Humanities Capstone course. This project was later transformed into a live display during the Eau Claire Hmong New Year Celebration in October.

Thao's work highlights the cultural significance of hand-stitched Hmong garments. "I love my culture, and I’m a big collector of traditional Hmong clothing," she stated. She emphasized that these clothes represent identity and heritage. Her aim was to inspire younger generations to understand their roots and appreciate authentic clothing.

The exhibit featured 22 outfits from Bee Vang-Moua’s personal collection, who also curated the event. Thao collaborated with several experts, including Lee Pao Xiong from Concordia University and Sarah Eileen Smith from UW-Stout's fashion design program.

"Fashion can be inspired by anything," Smith said, emphasizing the importance of history and culture in design inspiration. The project provided an opportunity for attendees to engage with significant garments and learn about fashion through a different perspective.

Thao expressed gratitude for the support she received from Wisconsin Humanities, Vang-Moua, Smith, and others involved in bringing her vision to reality. She completed her degree in December 2024 and continues her work with the Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association.

UW-Stout offers various community events throughout the year, including workshops connecting participants with local media representatives.
