Blugolds fall short against No.15 Warhawks despite halftime lead

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team faced a setback against the 15th-ranked UW-Whitewater, losing 65-54 at the Sonnentag Event Center. Despite leading at halftime, the Blugolds could not maintain their advantage as UW-Whitewater mounted a strong second-half comeback.

UW-Eau Claire held a narrow 26-24 lead by halftime after an evenly matched first half. The Warhawks initially led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. However, the Blugolds surged ahead with a 7-0 run early in the second quarter, aided by Kyla Overskei's consecutive three-pointers.

In the third quarter, UW-Whitewater gained momentum with a decisive 10-2 run that shifted control in their favor. By the end of the third quarter, UW-Eau Claire trailed 44-39. Although they managed to close within three points with four minutes remaining, they could not overtake their opponents. The Warhawks concluded with a 13-5 run to secure victory.

Kyla Overskei contributed significantly for UW-Eau Claire with 15 points and eight rebounds. Reanna Hutchinson and Jessilyn Ernst each added 11 points, with Hutchinson also securing seven rebounds. The Blugolds shot 30% from the field compared to UW-Whitewater's 39%.

Looking ahead, UW-Eau Claire will face No. 21 UW-Stout on Wednesday, January 22, in Menomonie. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
