ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team defeated St. John's (Minn.) in a shootout with a score of 6-4 on Friday at the Municipal Athletic Conference. Eli Reimer, a sophomore from Lansing, Michigan, achieved his first hat trick as a Blugold, contributing significantly to UW-Eau Claire's victory.
The game saw eight goals during the final two periods between both teams. Reimer's hat trick was completed within the last 24 minutes of the match.
The Blugolds, now holding a record of 6-9-1, initially took the lead with a goal by Dayne Hoyord midway through the first period. However, St. John's quickly responded to tie the game at 1-1 by the end of the first intermission.
In an explosive second period for UW-Eau Claire, Charlie Erickson scored with just over eight minutes remaining in that period. The Blugolds then added three more goals in the final four minutes: Reimer scored with three and a half minutes left; Colin Stein followed up with a power play goal shortly after to make it 4-2.
St. John's narrowed their deficit with just over two and a half minutes left in that period before Reimer netted his second goal only 21 seconds later, bringing the score to 5-3 entering into the third period.
With under six minutes remaining in regulation time, St. John's managed another goal making it close at one-goal difference until Reimer secured his hat trick by scoring an empty-netter less than one minute before full-time—ensuring victory for UW-Eau Claire.
Max Gutjahr made notable contributions as well by saving 29 shots on target while seven different players assisted throughout this matchup for UW-Eau Claire.
