The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's basketball team faced a challenging third quarter, leading to a 59-48 loss against UW-Platteville at the Sonnentag Event Center. The Pioneers outscored the Blugolds 21-6 in that quarter, securing a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) victory.
UW-Eau Claire (6-9, 1-3) started strong and led after the first half. They began with an 8-2 run and ended the first quarter ahead at 15-13. The second quarter saw them extend their lead to nine points when Reanna Hutchinson scored with 1:33 left, making it 31-22. By halftime, they were up by six points at 31-25.
Anna Koth's early three-pointer in the third quarter put the Blugolds back up by nine. However, UW-Platteville (8-7, 2-2) limited UW-Eau Claire to just three points for the rest of the quarter. They managed a significant run, outscoring their opponents 19-3 in the final six minutes to lead 46-37 entering the fourth quarter.
The Blugolds narrowed the gap to six points with under four minutes remaining but couldn't close it further. UW-Platteville concluded with a decisive 7-2 run. Hutchinson and Koth each scored 13 points for UW-Eau Claire, with Hutchinson also contributing seven rebounds. Kyla Overskei added eight points and seven rebounds as well.
UW-Eau Claire shot at a rate of 35% from the field and only managed a 25% success rate from beyond the arc, while UW-Platteville achieved a slightly better overall shooting percentage of 42%.
Next on their schedule is a home game against No. 15 ranked UW-Whitewater on Saturday, January 18th at Sonnentag Event Center with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m.
