The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team faced a narrow defeat against Gustavus Adolphus College, ranked fifth nationally, with a final score of 4-3. The match took place on Tuesday at Don Roberts Ice Rink in Saint Peter, Minnesota.
The Blugolds, ranked 12th, began the game strongly with Ava Johansson scoring just 48 seconds into the match. Jess Eykyn assisted in this early goal. However, Gustavus Adolphus equalized in the last minute of the first period and took control in the second period by scoring twice more, leading 3-1.
Ava Bullert managed to reduce the deficit for UW-Eau Claire with a goal before the halfway point of the second period, assisted by Samantha Bandholz. Gustavus Adolphus extended their lead again early in the third period. The Blugolds responded with a power play goal from Bandholz, assisted by Bullert, bringing them within one goal at 4-3.
Despite a strong effort towards the end of the game, UW-Eau Claire was unable to secure an equalizer. Alexa Backmann made seven saves for UW-Eau Claire during the match. Both teams scored once on three power play opportunities each. The Blugolds outshot their opponents 15-11.
Next up for UW-Eau Claire is a return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play as they host UW-Stevens Point on Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena.
