The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team was defeated 4-1 by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Tuesday at Hobbs Ice Arena. Despite an early lead, the Blugolds were unable to hold off the Pointers, who scored three times in the final period during this Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) matchup.
UW-Eau Claire's Connor Szmul put his team ahead just over two minutes into the game with assists from Colin Stein and Carter Bradley. The score remained 1-0 in favor of UW-Eau Claire until late in the second period when UW-Stevens Point tied the game.
The Pointers took control midway through the third period with a go-ahead goal. They extended their lead after intercepting a pass in UW-Eau Claire's defensive zone and secured victory with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Max Gutjahr made 26 saves for UW-Eau Claire, which outshot UW-Stevens Point 33-30.
Next, UW-Eau Claire will travel to face St. John's (Minn.) on Friday, January 17, at Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
