The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team achieved a clean sweep in pool action, advancing to the semifinals of the Budd Whitehill National Duals at Lycoming College. The Blugolds, ranked fifth nationally and winners of the tournament for two consecutive years, dominated their group matches.
UW-Eau Claire secured victories against Oswego State with a score of 47-7, Williams 39-3, and Washington and Lee 40-9. Several wrestlers remained unbeaten throughout these duals. Izzy Balsiger, ranked sixth and hailing from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, won all his matches at 125 pounds with one pin and two technical falls.
Preston Carlisle from Red Wing, Minnesota/Cannon Falls also went undefeated at 165 pounds, achieving two wins by fall and one by major decision. Jared Stricker from High Bridge, Wisconsin/Ashland maintained his top rank by winning twice by fall and once due to disqualification at 174 pounds. Stricker is now on the verge of setting a new UW-Eau Claire career record for pins.
Overall, the Blugolds recorded 12 pins and five technical falls during the day's events.
Looking ahead, the Blugolds (9-1) are set to face No. 19 Ithaca College in the semifinal round scheduled for Saturday, January 11. The match will commence at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time at Lycoming College.
