The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team secured a 69-56 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday at the Kolf Sports Center. This marks their first win in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) this season. The Blugolds capitalized on a strong first half to overcome the Titans, who had been recognized in the recent D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.
UW-Eau Claire, now holding a 9-4 record overall and 1-1 in conference play, surged ahead towards the end of the first half. They outscored UW-Oshkosh 44-29, with a significant portion of their points coming in the last five minutes before halftime. At one point, they held only a four-point lead with eight minutes remaining in the half but extended it to 15 points by halftime.
Gunnar Tebon was instrumental in this effort, scoring 21 points in the first half alone and contributing significantly to the team's momentum. He scored all of UW-Eau Claire's final 11 points before halftime. The Blugolds were highly effective from the floor during this period, achieving a shooting percentage of 58%, including an impressive 8 for 12 from beyond the arc.
In the second half, UW-Oshkosh struggled to close the gap as UW-Eau Claire maintained a double-digit lead throughout. The Blugolds also excelled in rebounding, leading that statistic with a margin of 35-28 over their opponents. Overall, they finished with a shooting accuracy of 51% and converted more than half of their three-point attempts.
Tebon concluded the game with a total of 21 points, sharing top-scoring honors with Carter Huschka who also added seven rebounds to his tally. Cade Hall recorded a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds while Andre Renta contributed 13 points along with seven assists and five rebounds.
This victory is particularly notable as it represents Head Coach Zach Malvik's first WIAC win since taking charge.
Looking ahead, UW-Eau Claire will host UW-River Falls on Saturday, January 11th at Sonnentag Event Center. The game is set to begin at 5 p.m.
