Two staff members from the University of Wisconsin-Stout have been recognized for their contributions to education and inclusivity. Associate Professor Min DeGruson and LGBTQIA+ Program Manager Fred Jomo Brown received special awards at a ceremony held on December 4 in Madison.
Min DeGruson, the director of UW-Stout's packaging program, was one of twelve recipients of the Outstanding Women of Color in Education Award. This award, now in its 29th year, acknowledges women of color for their transformative work in education and community involvement. Since joining UW-Stout in 2015, DeGruson has been active in various roles, including chairing the Food Packaging Division under the Institute of Food Technologists.
Provost Glendalí Rodríguez praised DeGruson's approachable nature and professional achievements, stating, “As a packaging engineer, Dr. DeGruson’s professional accomplishments are noteworthy, and she focuses on creating opportunities for students.” DeGruson emphasized her dedication to fostering a sense of belonging among students through initiatives such as industry connections and study abroad programs.
Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman commented on the significance of honoring these women: “The Universities of Wisconsin have a longstanding commitment to inclusion at our universities. We are proud to honor these women of color whose achievements are helping our campuses and communities.”
Fred Jomo Brown was honored with the Dr. P.B. Poorman Award for Outstanding Achievement on Behalf of LGBTQ+ People. This award recognizes individuals who have contributed to creating safer environments for LGBTQIA+ communities. Brown joined UW-Stout as an adviser in 2020 and has since made significant impacts as the LGBTQIA+ program manager.
Mai Khou Xiong, Executive Director of Student Inclusion and Belonging, highlighted Brown's influence: “Through Fred’s leadership and guidance, students discover new identities within themselves...Fred’s purpose is centered around helping others to see the world in a broader context.” Brown shared his guiding principle: “My life’s mantra is informed by a quote from Peter Finley Dunne, ‘to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable.’”
The awards align with UW-Stout’s Focus2030 strategic plan goals which include promoting inclusive excellence by investing in diverse learning environments that reflect regional and global connections.
