The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team was defeated by top-ranked UW-River Falls with a score of 5-0 in a match held at Hunt Arena. This game marked the Blugolds' first loss in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) this season.
During the first period, the game remained scoreless, with Blugolds goalie Alexa Backmann making 11 saves to hold off the defending national champions. However, UW-River Falls broke through in the second period with three goals, including one in the final seconds. They further extended their lead with two early goals in the third period.
Backmann concluded the game with a total of 21 saves. Despite their defeat, UW-Eau Claire managed to outshoot their opponents with a 27-26 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams failed to capitalize on power play opportunities, each going 0 for 2. In terms of faceoffs, UW-River Falls had a slight edge with 26 compared to Eau Claire's 21.
Looking ahead, the Blugolds will host another challenging opponent as they take on No. 2 Gustavus Adolphus College on Tuesday, November 26th at Hobbs Ice Arena.
