The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team was defeated by UW-Superior with a score of 3-1 in their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener. The game took place on Friday at Siinto S. Wessman Arena.
UW-Superior established an early lead with a goal in the first period and increased it shortly after the start of the second period. Tyler Herzberg from UW-Eau Claire managed to score midway through the second period, assisted by Cade Lemmer and Leo Bacallao. Despite efforts to equalize, UW-Superior secured their victory with an empty net goal towards the end of regulation time.
Max Gutjahr, playing as goalie for UW-Eau Claire, recorded 22 saves during the match. Both teams were unsuccessful in converting any power plays, each going 0 for 4. Notably, UW-Eau Claire outshot UW-Superior 36-25.
Looking ahead, UW-Eau Claire aims to recover from this loss as they prepare to face off against UW-Stout in another WIAC game scheduled for Saturday, November 23 at Fanetti Community Center in Menomonie.
