Morgan Dekan, a senior from Altoona, Wisconsin, has been named UW-Eau Claire Athletics' Blugold of the Week. She is recognized for her achievements in both academics and athletics. Dekan is pursuing an economics major with minors in environment, society, and culture, as well as mathematics. Additionally, she holds a certificate in computer programming.
Dekan chose UW-Eau Claire for its athletic, academic, and financial suitability. Besides her athletic commitments, she is involved in undergraduate research on campus. Balancing her roles as a student-athlete requires effective time management skills that she has developed through sports and academics.
Reflecting on her athletic career at UW-Eau Claire, Dekan expressed pride in her perseverance during matches. "I am probably most proud of the fact that I never give up," she said. Last fall, she secured numerous victories after initial setbacks by winning almost all her matches in third-set tie-breaks.
Her pre-competition snack of choice is yogurt with fruit, while Culvers serves as her preferred post-match meal. Outside of sports and studies, Dekan enjoys crocheting and dreams of pursuing economics research as a career.
If given the chance to travel anywhere globally, Dekan would visit the Four Corners and Grand Canyon domestically or explore the Netherlands internationally. Her choice for spending a day with a professional athlete or celebrity would be Roger Federer.
Dekan advises fellow Blugold student-athletes to balance competition with self-care: "Be kind to yourself and make sure you take breaks from your sport/school to do fun things."
Her contributions extend beyond personal achievements; Ken Cychosz, Head Women's Tennis Coach noted: "No one on my team has a bigger passion for the sport than Morgan." Téa Armstrong from Women's Tennis described Morgan as "cheerful" and highlighted her positive influence on team dynamics.
