On June 13, a groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction for the $340.3 million Science and Health Sciences Building on the lower campus of UW-Eau Claire. The event featured several speakers, including Chancellor Schmidt, who highlighted the collaborative spirit and commitment to public good that has long characterized the university.
“Today, we start building our future on a foundation fortified by the collaborative spirit, innovative mindset and commitment to the public good to which this university has always aspired,” Schmidt stated.
The new five-story building will replace Phillips Hall, constructed 61 years ago. Designed to support research, teaching, and collaboration, it will be the largest science facility among regional comprehensive universities in the UW System and the largest academic building on UW-Eau Claire’s campus.
Schmidt credited multiple organizations for their support: "The project wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce, the Universities of Wisconsin, the state of Wisconsin, Mayo Clinic Health System and the University Relations and Facilities teams."
Construction is projected to continue through 2026 with an expected opening in 2027. Miron Construction Co., based in Neenah with an office in Eau Claire, serves as general prime contractor.
State Rep. Robert Wittke commended Schmidt’s dedication: “Wittke said...the building will make a difference 'in this community, in this state and for generations to come.'”
Department of Administration Secretary Kathy Blumenfeld emphasized Governor Tony Evers' support: “We all know to attract new talent...we must invest in our Universities of Wisconsin.”
Mayo Clinic Health System will occupy approximately 10,000 square feet within the new building. Dr. Richard Helmers noted that collaborating with UW-Eau Claire would enable investment in groundbreaking research and rural health care innovation: “This campus and this building makes us better doctors.”
Dave Minor from Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce reflected on why they championed an academic building: "We looked at how it is going to transform this community..."
Student body president Sam Consiglio expressed enthusiasm for future opportunities: "Today marks a new beginning...the interests of future students will be sparked and fostered through experiences provided by this new building."
