Emily Fox, an accounting graduate, expresses pride in her academic achievements and preparation for the business world. "I've had a wonderful academic experience and I'm proud of many things I've accomplished and been a part of," she states. "But the biggest highlight for me is that I beat the odds and completed my 150 credits in four years."
Fox managed to complete her degree within four years despite starting with only eight credits from high school, a feat often taking five years for accounting majors. "I knew I could do it and I'm very proud of making it happen," she says.
She attributes her success to careful scheduling rather than planning out each class over four years. Sticking to a defined credit load each term was crucial. "For every semester, three winter and three summer terms, I knew exactly how many credits I needed to complete," she explains. Online courses facilitated her ability to manage internships while maintaining her course load.
"After my sophomore and junior years, I did summer internships in the Twin Cities area, one in accounting and one in finance," Fox recalls. These opportunities were possible due to commuting from her hometown of Osceola while completing online courses.
Fox acknowledges the significant support from faculty members such as Dr. William Miller and DeeAnn Peterson-Meyer at the College of Business (COB). She notes their consistent encouragement played a major role in her success.
Dr. William Miller commends Fox's qualities: "Emily is a bright, tenacious, and fearless student who will make a tremendous contribution to any company she joins in her future." He highlights her confidence and willingness to ask questions as important attributes.
DeeAnn Peterson-Meyer also praises Fox's dedication: “Emily truly embodies the spirit of giving back. She excels academically and dedicates her time and effort to making a positive impact both on campus and in the broader community.”
Following graduation in May, Fox plans to prepare for certified public accountant exams over the summer before starting a job in the fall. She aims to commute from her hometown to work somewhere in the Twin Cities area.
Fox believes that her leadership roles within COB student organizations will help distinguish her as an engaged professional candidate. She has served as president of organizations like Student Accounting Society and Beta Alpha Psi business honor society.
"I've had amazing preparation for the realm of business," Fox concludes. Notable experiences include managing the accounting department tutoring lab, organizing events like Youth in STEM for marginalized students, among others at UWEC which have helped prepare her for future endeavors.
