Blugold volleyball defeats College of Saint Benedict in four sets

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire volleyball team secured a four-set victory over the College of Saint Benedict on Wednesday at Claire Lynch Hall in St. Joseph, Minnesota. After losing the first set 23-25, UW-Eau Claire responded by winning the next three sets 25-16, 25-20, and 25-14.

In the opening set, both teams played closely, with Saint Benedict edging out UW-Eau Claire despite a comeback attempt from a 6-2 deficit by the Blugolds. Abby Stanwood recorded a kill and a service ace for UWEC while Bailey Leeke added four kills. Libby Burns of Saint Benedict delivered two late service aces to help her team secure the set.

UW-Eau Claire took control in the second set with a 25-16 win. Stanwood contributed multiple kills and another service ace. Lili Hagg and Norah Erickson provided key blocks at the net as UW-Eau Claire capitalized on several errors from Saint Benedict to maintain their lead.

The third set saw Mya Cinnamo and Stanwood each tallying four kills as UW-Eau Claire won 25-20. Alex Kiebel assisted on multiple plays and helped facilitate offense for her teammates. The Blugolds benefited from attack and service errors committed by Saint Benedict during this stretch.

In the fourth set, Cinnamo led with five kills while Leeke added four kills and a service ace to guide UW-Eau Claire to a decisive 25-14 finish. The Blugolds maintained their advantage throughout, closing out the match with consistent offensive pressure.

Stanwood finished as UWEC’s top scorer with 18.5 points on 16 kills and 18 digs. Leeke contributed 15 kills, two service aces, and collected 12 digs for an overall total of 18 points. Cinnamo posted a .440 hitting percentage with 13 kills in just 25 attempts. Kiebel led in assists with 37 while also recording two aces and making double-digit digs.

UW-Eau Claire improved its season record to 11-1 while Saint Benedict dropped to an overall mark of 8-2.
