The University of Wisconsin-Stout recently held its annual Leadership Awards ceremony, recognizing the exceptional contributions of over 100 students. Among them, 16 seniors were awarded the prestigious Samuel E. Wood Medallion, which is considered the university’s highest nonacademic honor for students. This award celebrates their leadership, involvement, and service to the university community.
Two recipients of the Wood Medallion were also distinguished as Outstanding Student Leaders of the Year: Katy Liester from Menomonie, majoring in professional and technical communication; and Sophia Moore from Red Wing, Minnesota, studying applied social science.
Liester's nominator highlighted her extensive involvement on campus since her arrival at UW-Stout. “Katy has been an involved student since the moment she stepped foot on UW-Stout’s campus,” they said. They praised her ability to adapt and make others feel included while knowing when to empower others to lead.
Moore was recognized for her boldness and compassion in leadership roles. Her nominator noted that she is committed to ensuring student voices are heard across campus life. “She is determined and driven, always pushing forward to create meaningful change and opportunities for others,” they stated.
The Samuel E. Wood Medallion is presented to less than 1% of full-time students who have shown outstanding leadership alongside their academic achievements. A committee comprising faculty, staff, and students selects the recipients.
Liester's leadership journey began with Blue Devil Productions where she held multiple positions including communications director and executive producer. She credits these experiences with helping her grow personally and professionally.
Reflecting on her time at UW-Stout, Liester expressed gratitude towards those who supported her growth in leadership roles. She plans to pursue a career in events management after graduating in August.
Moore has taken up various leadership positions including serving as a student senator for the Stout Student Association before becoming director of Legislative Affairs. She aims to continue into public service following graduation in winter 2026 by working with legislators or attending law school.
Other notable awards presented at the ceremony included Outstanding Student Leader of the Year given also to Ava Allroggen from Minneapolis; Student Employee of the Year; Student Staff Team of the Year; Student Organization Event of the Year; among others.
Samuel E. Wood served as assistant chancellor for Student Services/Dean of Students until his retirement in 1991 and passed away in February 2013.
The event was sponsored by several organizations including the Involvement Center and Career Services with additional awards recognizing cooperative education efforts distributed during this celebration.
