The University of Wisconsin-Stout has once again been recognized for its efforts to support military students, earning the distinction of Military Friendly School for the 16th consecutive year. This recognition, which includes a silver designation, highlights the university's ongoing commitment to serving the needs of veterans and their families. UW-Stout is one of five institutions in Wisconsin to appear on the Military Friendly small public university list and has also been named a Military Spouse Friendly School.

Retired Army Lt. Col. Brian Hackner, who serves as the military education benefits coordinator at UW-Stout's Veteran Services, emphasized the impact of this achievement. "There are a lot of programs we have that match with the experience and careers that the military students have," Hackner noted. Programs in fields such as engineering, manufacturing, information technology, and supply chain management cater to the skills and experience of military students.

Christopher Engen, a Veterans Services Consultant and retired U.S. Army colonel, highlighted UW-Stout's emphasis on applied learning. “UW-Stout’s focus on applied learning resonates with veteran and military students, because of the many similarities to their military experience,” he said.

The university's recognition extends beyond academic programs. Engen identified the comprehensive support offered by Veteran Services, stating, "First and foremost, we help them get the most out of their military and veteran education benefits." The office provides guidance on various military education benefits and acts as a central hub for military students' needs, fostering a supportive community on campus.

In addition to these honors, UW-Stout was named the top public school in Wisconsin for veterans by Military Times and ranked 12th in the Midwest. U.S. News & World Report also recognizes the university as one of the Best Schools for Veterans.

Veteran Services at UW-Stout supports military-affiliated students by advising on education benefits, facilitating applications, and fostering a sense of community. They also run the Veterans Mentorship Program and operate the Military and Veterans Resources Center on campus.

As of fall 2024, nearly 200 military students were enrolled, along with 629 spouses or dependents of veterans or military members. The most recent First Destination Report from UW-Stout indicated that all veteran graduates were employed within six months of graduation.
