The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team secured a place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship game after defeating UW-Stevens Point 8-2. This victory allowed the Blugolds to sweep the two-game series and advance to the conference final for the ninth consecutive season.
The Blugolds won the first game of the series 4-0 on Friday, setting up another strong performance on Saturday. Madisyn Krumholz and Rachel Mirwald each scored twice, contributing significantly to UW-Eau Claire's win. Ava Bullert provided two assists during the match.
UW-Eau Claire started strong, scoring four goals in both the first and second periods. After an early tie at 1-1, Jana Lesch and Lauren Ballinger scored consecutively within two minutes, giving their team a lead they maintained throughout the game. Despite UW-Stevens Point narrowing the gap with a goal shortly after Ballinger's score, UW-Eau Claire responded with five unanswered goals.
Ellie Andersen and Quinn Hartmetz also found the net for UW-Eau Claire. Goalkeeper Alexa Backmann made eight saves during her time in net.
The Blugolds are set to face top-ranked UW-River Falls in the WIAC championship game on March 8 in River Falls at 2 p.m.
