In January, a community meeting was held to address the budget challenges faced by the School District. Over 170 participants, including parents and staff, gathered to discuss potential budget reductions and the possibility of closing elementary schools.
During the meeting, attendees were asked if the School District should pursue another Operational Referendum. A significant majority, 84%, supported pursuing an Operational Referendum in April. Based on this feedback, the Board of Education decided on January 13 to propose a $5 million non-recurring levy override for the April 1, 2025 ballot. This levy override would be effective for six years, starting with the 2025-2026 school year and concluding with the 2030-2031 school year. If approved, it would permit the School Board to levy up to an additional $5 million annually. It is important to note that this amount is non-compounding; thus, it remains at $5 million each year rather than increasing over time.
The article further elaborates on how these operational funds would be allocated, their impact on taxpayers, and cost-reduction measures already implemented by the School District.
