The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team secured a 62-49 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday at the Sonnentag Event Center. This win ensured the Blugolds the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament.
UW-Eau Claire, with a record of 16-8 overall and 8-5 in conference play, established an early lead against UW-Oshkosh, which stands at 12-12 overall and 3-10 in conference games. The Blugolds were led by Andre Renta from Hudson, Wisconsin, who scored 19 points, and Carter Huschka from Farmington, Minnesota, who added 16 points. They achieved a shooting percentage of 41% and successfully made all their free throws.
The game began with a strong performance by UW-Eau Claire as they went on a 9-2 run initiated by three-pointers from Michael Casper and Carter Huschka. By halftime, they had extended their lead to nine points with a score of 30-21 after holding UW-Oshkosh to just four points in the final minutes of the first half.
Although the Titans reduced their deficit to six points midway through the second half, UW-Eau Claire responded quickly with an 8-1 run that sealed their victory. Both Michael Casper and Carter Lichtsinn contributed significantly with each scoring 11 points while Cade Hall dominated defensively with 13 rebounds. Overall, the Blugolds out-rebounded the Titans by a margin of twelve.
Looking ahead, UW-Eau Claire will conclude its regular season facing off against UW-Whitewater at home on Saturday, February 22nd. The game is scheduled for a tip-off at 5 p.m., followed by Senior Night celebrations.
