The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team secured a victory over UW-Stevens Point with a score of 66-62 on Saturday at Quandt Fieldhouse. This win in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) came after the Blugolds overcame a deficit in the final two minutes.
UW-Eau Claire, holding a record of 15-8 overall and 7-5 in conference play, was trailing by three points after the Pointers made a tie-breaking three-pointer with less than two minutes left in regulation. The Blugolds responded with a decisive 9-2 run to claim the road victory.
After falling behind 60-57, UW-Eau Claire hit three free throws before Andre Renta, a junior from Hudson, Wisconsin, scored a go-ahead layup with 43 seconds remaining. The Blugolds maintained their lead by making crucial free throws during the closing moments.
The game was competitive throughout, with neither team leading by more than seven points. Renta led his team with 21 points and six assists. Carter Huschka, a senior from Farmington, Minnesota, achieved a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Carter Lichtsinn from Olathe, Kansas added eight points to the scoreboard.
UW-Eau Claire shot 48% from the field and had an advantage in rebounding with a tally of 30-25 over their opponents. This victory completed their regular-season sweep against UW-Stevens Point.
Looking ahead, the Blugolds will play their final two regular-season games at home. They are currently positioned third in WIAC standings as they prepare for Wednesday's matchup against UW-Oshkosh at Sonnentag Event Center starting at 7 p.m.
