The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team faced a challenging match against the second-ranked UW-River Falls, resulting in a 9-2 loss in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) game on Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena. The Blugolds, ranked 14th, initially took the lead but were unable to maintain it against the Falcons.
Quinn Hartmetz from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, scored for the Blugolds less than seven minutes into the first period with an assist from McKenna Sandberg of Saint Michael, Minnesota. However, UW-River Falls quickly responded with a tying goal and then added another before the first intermission, leading 2-1 after the first period.
The Falcons extended their lead significantly during the second period by scoring four goals. Although Ava Bullert from North Oaks, Minnesota, managed to score for Eau Claire with help from Mathilde Vetter of Fargo, North Dakota, making it 3-2 at one point, River Falls widened their lead again to end the period at 6-2.
In the third period, UW-River Falls scored three additional goals. Tegan Swanson from Eden Prairie made 22 saves for UW-Eau Claire. The Falcons outshot Eau Claire with a 31-17 advantage.
Next up for the Blugolds is another WIAC matchup as they host Northland College on Wednesday, February 12 at Hobbs Ice Arena at 7 p.m.
