The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team was defeated by No. 13 UW-Superior in their series finale, with a score of 2-0 on Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena. The Blugolds and Yellowjackets were tied going into the final period before the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) leaders secured their win.
The game remained scoreless until the third period when the Yellowjackets, who now hold a record of 16-3-2 overall and 9-1-1 in conference play, scored the decisive goal with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation time. They extended their lead with an empty-net goal during the last minute and a half of the game.
Max Gutjahr, a junior from Appleton, Wisconsin, made 20 saves to keep UW-Eau Claire competitive throughout the match. Despite holding a 26-22 advantage in shots, the Blugolds were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Both teams struggled on power plays, combining for an unsuccessful 0 for 11.
Looking ahead, UW-Eau Claire will face off against UW-River Falls on Friday, February 7. Both teams currently have 18 points in the WIAC standings as they approach the end of their schedule. The game is set to begin at 7:05 p.m., followed by a rematch on February 8.
