The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team achieved a second-place finish at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Invite, held at the Kern Center. The Blugolds, ranked third nationally, secured individual titles through Preston Carlisle and Zach Sato.
The Blugolds accumulated 127 points, placing them behind Augsburg, which scored 176 points to win the meet. Zach Sato emerged as the champion in the 149-pound category. He maintained an undefeated record of 4-0 during the event, with two victories by technical fall and two by decision. In the finals, he overcame Matt Randolph from Augsburg with a 3-1 decision.
Preston Carlisle clinched victory in the 165-pound bracket by winning all three matches. His quarterfinal and semifinal wins were achieved through first-period pins. In the championship match, Carlisle was leading when his opponent faced disqualification.
Travis Moelter, Landon Church, and Ian Pepple each secured runner-up positions in their respective weight classes. Moelter competed at 133 pounds with a record of 3-1; Church also went 3-1 at 157 pounds; Pepple finished with a record of 2-1 at 197 pounds.
Cole Matulenko took third place in the 197-pound category. Jan Hernandez-Soto and Zak McPhee both earned fourth-place finishes in their respective categories of 165 and 184 pounds.
Looking ahead, the Blugolds are set to host UW-La Crosse for a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual on Wednesday, December 11th. The event will take place at the McPhee Center starting at 7 p.m.
