The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team secured a 3-0 victory against No. 10 UW-River Falls on Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena. The Blugolds took the lead in the second period and extended it with two more goals in the third, marking a significant win in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).
Max Gutjahr played a crucial role by stopping all 25 shots, including 14 saves in the final period, to achieve a shutout. Tyler Herzberg scored the decisive goal late in the second period with assists from Will Brenner and Leo Bacallao.
In the third period, Max Dronen increased the Blugold lead with another goal, assisted by Dayne Hoyord. Connor Szmul sealed the victory with an empty net goal near the end of the game, assisted by Herzberg. The Blugolds outshot their opponents 34-25.
This win marks UW-Eau Claire's first triumph over a top-10 opponent since January 2024 when they defeated sixth-ranked St. Scholastica. It also represents their second consecutive shutout following a previous 6-0 win over Northland.
The Blugolds will continue WIAC play with an upcoming two-game series against No. 13 UW-Stevens Point, starting Friday, December 13, at Stevens Point.
