With numerous events occurring annually at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, one might expect Tyler Edmondson, assistant director of Event Services, to take a break when away from campus. However, Edmondson embraces challenges both in his professional and personal life. He recently completed his second Marji Gesick 100-mile trail run in Marquette, Michigan, finishing in 37 hours and 30 minutes.

"This run was much harder than my first time at the 100-mile," said Edmondson. "My training took a hit last summer due to COVID-19, so this one was rough." Despite reaching a difficult stretch where he doubted finishing, he credited his support team for helping him complete the race.

Edmondson graduated with a degree in theatre arts from UW-Eau Claire in 2013. Initially a casual runner, he found himself drawn to the ethos of this demanding event. "The 906 Adventure Team organizes the event. There is no big fanfare at the finish, no podium or medals — it’s all about the experience and the journey," he noted.

During the race, Edmondson ran alone for long stretches after starting with two fellow runners from Eau Claire. He took minimal breaks along the way. He sees parallels between such endurance events and his work with students at UW-Eau Claire.

"Since my own time working on campus events as a student...there is much to gain in pushing through suffering to do a very difficult job," he explained. The same dedication applies whether tackling challenging races or managing complex events like the Viennese Ball.

Edmondson aims to provide high-impact learning experiences for student Event Production Crew (EPC) members each year. His career path began as an undergraduate majoring in theatre at UWEC, leading him through various roles that enhanced his leadership and problem-solving skills.

"Our goals and purpose with the EPC staff are to develop a strong and supportive community while developing tangible high-impact practices for each employee," said Edmondson. His passion lies in fostering community building among students.

Reflecting on his role within Eau Claire's vibrant community, Edmondson appreciates its natural beauty and cultural offerings. Had he not pursued this career path, he imagines working in outdoor or experiential education but believes higher education would eventually call him back.

In addition to his work responsibilities, Edmondson enjoys spending time outdoors or relaxing at local venues around Eau Claire when not on campus.
