The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team faced a challenging start to their season, losing 4-1 to St. Olaf on Friday night at Hobbs Ice Arena. The Blugolds managed to level the score after falling behind early but could not withstand St. Olaf's offensive surge, which saw the Oles net three consecutive goals.
St. Olaf took an early lead just under six minutes into the first period. The Blugolds responded in the second period when Max Dronen scored his first career goal, assisted by Ben Monson and Charlie Erickson, with about 11 minutes remaining before the second intermission.
However, St. Olaf quickly regained control with a goal two minutes later and extended their lead with another before the end of the second period. They secured their victory with a final goal on an empty net in the last two minutes of play.
Max Gutjahr made 14 saves for UW-Eau Claire, who outshot St. Olaf 45-18 but struggled on power plays, failing to convert any of their four opportunities.
Looking ahead, UW-Eau Claire will aim for a win in their next game against Bethel (Minn.) at home on Saturday, November 9, as part of Youth Night at Hobbs Ice Arena.
