The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's soccer team secured the No. 3 seed for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament with a narrow 1-0 victory over UW-Stout on Saturday. This win, in their regular season finale, ensures that the Blugolds will begin their postseason at home.
Johanna Thompson, a freshman from Green Bay, scored the only goal of the match in the seventh minute. She capitalized on a cross from Haley Von Rentzell to give her team an early lead.
Goalkeepers Bella Jones and Kennedy Boll combined efforts to achieve the Blugolds' third consecutive shutout and eighth overall clean sheet of the season. Each played one half, with Jones recording five saves during her time in goal.
UW-Eau Claire had a significant edge in shots on goal, finishing with a 10-5 advantage and outperformed UW-Stout in corner kicks as well, taking six compared to three by their opponents.
The Blugolds concluded their WIAC schedule with a record of 3-1-3, accumulating 12 points to secure their position as the third seed in the tournament.
Next up for UW-Eau Claire is a matchup against sixth-seeded UW-Whitewater in the opening round of the WIAC Tournament. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5 at Simpson Field, starting at 7 p.m. In their previous encounter this season, both teams ended with a 1-1 draw.
