A group of University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire athletes participated in the Drake Relays held in Des Moines, Iowa, over the weekend. The event saw two notable performances by Yakob Ekoue and Teagan Jones, who both set new school records.
Yakob Ekoue secured first place in the men's discus with a throw measuring 60.16 meters. This achievement not only broke the program record but also ranks as the second longest throw across all divisions and third longest in Division III history. Ekoue's performance stood out among 24 athletes from various schools.
Teagan Jones achieved a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw with a personal best of 59.73 meters. Her performance marks the longest hammer throw in program history and is currently the top Division III throw this year. It is also recorded as the eighth longest throw in Division III history.
The men's relay team consisting of Sam Piontek, Colin McClowry, Connor Jankuski, and Stefan Klechefski competed in both 4x100 and 4x400 events. They finished sixth in their heat for the 4x100 prelims with a time of 41.24 seconds but did not advance further. In the 4x400 prelims, they posted an impressive time of 3:17.41, ranking them eleventh out of thirty-one teams.
Looking ahead, the Blugolds are preparing for the WIAC Championships at UW-Platteville on May 3rd and 4th.
