The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire football team faced a challenging match against No. 6 UW-River Falls, losing 71-14 at Ramer Field at Smith Stadium. Despite scoring two second-half touchdowns, the Blugolds were unable to overcome their formidable opponent in their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener.
The Falcons took a commanding lead early in the game, amassing a 50-point advantage by halftime with a particularly strong second quarter where they scored 35 points. Their first-half performance included five touchdowns, four of which came from the ground game, and nearly 400 yards of offense before the break. UW-River Falls scored the first 64 points of the game.
Christian Torgerson put the Blugolds on the scoreboard with a five-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter. Jacob Donohue added another score with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Jayce Kolinski late in the fourth quarter. The Blugolds managed to gain 265 yards of offense compared to 605 by the Falcons.
Torgerson led his team’s rushing efforts with 103 yards on 15 carries. Demetrius Bergmann contributed with nine rushes for 28 yards. Quarterback Harry Roubidoux completed nine passes for 112 yards, while Donohue completed one of two passes for nine yards and a touchdown.
Among receivers, Nolan Stans recorded 46 receiving yards on two receptions. Isaac Garside and Franko Williams each had three catches for 33 and 32 yards respectively. On defense, Brady Puls led with ten total tackles and Peyton Erikson had six solo tackles.
Looking ahead, UW-Eau Claire aims to recover when they host UW-Stevens Point for Homecoming on October 12 at Carson Park. The Blugolds have won their last three meetings against UW-Stevens Point, including a close victory last season.
