The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's soccer team secured a 5-1 victory against Bethel University in a nonconference game on Wednesday. Nathan Donovan, a senior from Hazel Green, Wis., recorded his second consecutive hat trick within a week.
The match began with an early goal for UW-Eau Claire when Tate McDermott drew a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. Donovan converted the penalty to give the Blugolds an early lead. Eight minutes later, Donovan scored again with a header into the bottom right corner, assisted by Alek Laroi and Andrew Phillips.
After halftime, Carter Thiesfeld extended Eau Claire's lead with a goal following a cross from Owen Williams. Donovan completed his hat trick in the 51st minute with assistance from Noah Malcook and McDermott. Elijah Post added the final goal for the Blugolds, using his speed to bypass a defender and score.
Mark Belknap played most of the minutes as goalkeeper for UW-Eau Claire, stopping all three shots he faced and earning his third win of the season.
The Blugolds (4-0-1) will next play at home against UW-Superior on Saturday, September 14th at Simpson Field.
