The City Manager's weekly update for June 21, 2024, provides several updates and insights into ongoing projects and activities within the city.
**City Updates:**
**Traffic Counts:** The Engineering Department announced that traffic cameras would be installed at city intersections starting next week to collect data. Additionally, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) will gather traffic data using tube counters on streets. This data will assist in traffic planning efforts. Residents can view the DOT’s traffic counts online.
**Transit Transfer Center Updates:** Cory Tietz, Community Services Operations Coordinator, reported resumed construction activity at the Transit Transfer Center site downtown. Merge Urban Development Group is constructing three levels of residential housing, adding 88 multi-family dwelling units. At least 40 units will be affordable for families earning 80 percent of Eau Claire County’s median income.
**Recreation FAQs:** The Recreation Department shared a list of frequently asked questions regarding summer programming and encouraged residents to review it to ensure smooth participation in programs.
**Water Safety Day:** A reminder was issued about Water Safety Day at Fairfax Pool on June 22, where lifeguards will teach basic water safety and first aid.
**Northside Fire Response:** The Fire Department detailed their response to a structure fire on the north side of the city limits. They collaborated with neighboring public safety units to extinguish the fire efficiently.
**River Levels:** The area is under a flash flood watch until Saturday afternoon. Most heavy precipitation is expected south of Eau Claire, with minimal impact on river levels until Sunday morning.
**Shout-Outs:**
The Police Department received gratitude from an individual for handling a situation involving a potentially armed suspect near Lakeshore Elementary. Another thank you came from Recreation's River City Adventure team to various departments for participating in “Safety Week.”
The Employee Picnic saw significant turnout despite earlier rain, with organizers expressing thanks to all who helped make it successful.
**Questions & Answers:**
A resident asked about Mayo Clinic Health System’s lawsuit regarding tax exemption status. The response clarified that while non-profit hospitals are exempt from property tax by state law, clinical or medical office buildings are not.
Another question addressed why the emergency alert system was not used during a recent incident around Hobbs/Carson Park area. It was explained that protocols for using the alert system are still being developed.
Concerns were raised about unclear lane markings on Farwell Street by the Transit Center. City Engineer Leah Ness assured that pavement marking operations had begun and that this location would be prioritized.
