The Grief Services Research Project is nearing its conclusion, with final community input to be collected by February 28. Over the past nine months, feedback has been gathered from hundreds of individuals, agencies, and organizations regarding grief and loss support services in the region. A survey of over 700 individuals across the Chippewa Valley provided significant insights into existing services and highlighted gaps in care.
However, early data indicates that traditionally underrepresented communities, such as those living in low to middle-income households, people from rural areas, people of color, and those not affiliated with a traditional faith community, remain underrepresented.
“We’ve learned so much from the community so far,” said Ann Kaiser, founder of AMK Nonprofit Coaching, LLC. “But to create equitable and effective solutions, we need to hear from those who face the greatest barriers to grief support.”
The project aims to guide how a $4.8 million endowment at the Eau Claire Community Foundation is allocated—providing $160,000 annually for grief and holistic healing services. To ensure these funds meet diverse community needs, additional input is sought from:
- Traditionally underrepresented communities
- Service providers
- Professional advocates
Surveys are open until February 28 for community members and professionals willing to participate:

The Grief Services Research Project was initiated in 2024 following the closure of HSHS hospitals in Western Wisconsin. Funds were transferred to the Eau Claire Community Foundation from various endowments. The research conducted by AMK Nonprofit Coaching will conclude in May 2025 and will inform fund allocation decisions.
“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the future of grief support services in our region,” Kaiser added. “We want to ensure every voice is heard.”
