Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestlers lead standings after day one of Wheaton Invitational

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team leads the standings after the first day of the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational in Wheaton, Illinois. The Blugolds, ranked sixth nationally, have four wrestlers advancing to the semifinals in their respective weight classes.

The team accumulated 97 points on the opening day, maintaining a narrow lead over second-place UW-Whitewater, which has 94 points. The tournament features 30 teams with each allowed one entry per weight class.

Among those advancing are Izzy Balsiger at 125 pounds, Zach Sato at 149 pounds, Jared Stricker at 174 pounds, and Niall Schoenfelder. Balsiger secured his semifinal spot with two victories and will face Isaic Paulino from Roanoke. Sato advanced by winning three matches and is set to compete against Dalton Monger from Messiah. Stricker pinned all his opponents and will meet Ryan Riser from UW-Whitewater as he seeks his third Wheaton title. Schoenfelder won with technical falls and a decision victory to reach the semifinals against Ryder Slayton from Messiah.

Four Blugolds remain in contention through consolation brackets: Calvin Singewald at 133 pounds, Finn Bloomquist at 141 pounds, Landon Church at 157 pounds, and Ian Pepple at 197 pounds.
